Denmark Summons US Ambassador Over Greenland Espionage Allegations

Denmark's Foreign Minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, has announced plans to summon the US ambassador following reports that American intelligence agencies have been directed to intensify surveillance activities in Greenland. The alleged focus includes monitoring the island's independence movement and exploring opportunities for mineral extraction.

The Wall Street Journal reported that US spy agencies were instructed to concentrate efforts on Greenland amid discussions about the island's strategic importance. While the Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, did not deny the report, she criticized the newspaper for allegedly politicizing and leaking classified information, accusing it of undermining national security.

Minister Rasmussen expressed concern over the lack of a strong denial from US officials, stating, "It doesn't seem to be strongly rejected by those who speak out. That worries me." He emphasized that Denmark does not engage in espionage against its allies and found the reports "somewhat disturbing."

The Danish Security and Intelligence Service (PET) acknowledged awareness of increased international interest in Greenland but declined to comment directly on the espionage claims. They noted a heightened espionage threat against Greenland and Denmark due to global attention on the region.

President Donald Trump has previously expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, suggesting that the US needs the island for international security purposes. He has not ruled out the use of military force to achieve this goal. Danish officials have condemned such statements and actions, including a visit by US Vice-President JD Vance to a remote military base in Greenland, viewing them as undue pressure on the island's political landscape.
