Looks as though Jonah Hill will be spending 2021’s dog days of summer at the beach. Records reveal the newly slimmed-down actor (“Get Him to the Greek,” “Moneyball,” “Knocked Up,” “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”) has paid exactly $9 million for a slickly contemporary home in Malibu Colony, an exclusive gated community where other residents include Sting, Flea, John McEnroe, and Rob Reiner.
In an odd coincidence — or maybe it’s not — Hill purchased the Malibu house from Richard and Laurie Stark, owners of the popular Chrome Hearts jewelry/apparel line. Avid real estate watchers may recall that Hill bought his current main residence in Santa Monica back in 2019 from the Starks’ eldest daughter, singer-songwriter Jesse Jo Stark.
Built in 1980 and since renovated, the house is a blocky, modernist affair with four bedrooms and four baths in just over 3,600 square feet of living space. Though located in seaside Malibu Colony, the property itself is not oceanfront; instead, it’s located on the less-desirable “land side” of the enclave, across the street from the beach but safe from crashing waves that have been known to occasionally pummel the community.
The Starks paid about $7.3 million for the house in 2017; last year, they set the place out for sale with a nearly $11 million pricetag; the property was removed from the market before Hill swooped in with a lowball offer. A quick comparison of photos from 2017 and now reveals the Chrome Hearts honchos don’t appear to have made any significant changes to the home, beyond the usual additions of some new furniture and artwork.
A windowless, monolithically white façade greets guests; there’s an attached garage and a gated courtyard entry that stretches deep into the property on its way to the front door.
Once inside, visitors will be impressed by the baronial great room that steals a huge chunk of the home’s square footage and combines the living room, dining room, and kitchen into one double-height open space. Clerestory windows and glassy French doors flood the space with natural light.
There’s more than a hint of industrial-chic style in the kitchen, where the cabinets have been painted a trendy black. A huge “rolling island,” per the listing, has seating for eight diners, and top-of-the-line appliances abound.
Like many Malibu properties, the backyard is compact, though the space comes well-equipped with a full outdoor kitchen, plus wooden decking for al fresco entertaining, and a rare lagoon-style pool/spa combo.
Back inside, there are two bedrooms upstairs, one of them being an oversized master retreat with fireplace, sitting area, and private deck. The master bath goes full spa-crazy with a sauna and separate steam room.
There’s also a rooftop third level with a deck, plus peek-a-boo ocean views over the roofs of homes across the street. Best of all, the property transferred to Hill with deeded beach access rights and even its own golf cart for convenient local transport.
Besides this $9 million Malibu getaway and his $6.7 million main Santa Monica residence, Hill continues to own a $9.2 million loft at New York City’s exclusive Schumacher building. Records indicate that pricey flat was leased out last year to an unknown tenant for a whopping $37,500 per month.
